Dear Tumblr

sorry I haven’t been on you lately, but I have been in the hospital and am currently out for a weekend pass. I will probably be at the mental health care unit for another few weeks. so, uhhm… I miss you?

If a clock gets hungry it goes back four seconds. Once you’ve seen one shopping center you’ve seen the mall. Acupuncture is a jab well done. Jumping off a Paris bridge makes you in Seine. Bakers trade recipes on a knead to know basis. Your calendar’s days are numbered. I break into song if I can’t find the key. A dyslexic poet writes inverse.

Psychiatry’s bible, the DSM, is doing more harm than good

As a clinical and research psychologist who served on (and resigned from) two committees that wrote the current edition of the DSM, I used to believe that the manual was scientific and that it helped patients and therapists. But after seeing its editors using poor-quality studies to support categories they wanted to include and ignoring or distorting high-quality research, I now believe that the DSM should be thrown out.

Furthermore, this book covers topics such as:  Neurosexism and gender perceptions in multiple races (as this is not a singularly white experience, just as the western world isn’t a singularly white experience) Sex discrimination in the workplace, and how women are (or, more often, are not) allowed to behave How science is used (badly) to support many of these claims Experiences of trans* people, both through interviews and empirical studies. AND FINALLY - It is all brilliantly researched, cited, compiled - and it’s easy to read! Cordelia Fine actually manages to be funny while writing this, which I think is important, because it makes all of this information infinitely accessible.
